How to select a lathe machine

The lathe is one of the oldest machine. In 1797 Henry maudslay , an englishman , designed the first screw cutting lathe. Lathe is a machine  tool which has given shape to our present day civilization by building machine and industry.

The main function of a lathe is to remove material from work piece. Some major operation which can be performed on by a lathe are

1. Straight turning

2.taper turning

3.thread cutting

4. Grooving

5. Facing

6.knurling

7.forming

8.drilling

9. boring

10.parting off

11.tapping

And many more.

Now how the size of a lathe is defined. The size of a lathe is specified by the following items

1.The swing diameter over bed. This is the largest diameter of work That can revolve without touching the bed.

2. The swing diameter over carriage . This is the largest diameter of work that will revolve over the lathe saddle and always less than the swing diameter over bed.

3. The height of the centers measured from the lathe bed.

4.The length between centers. This is the maximum length of work that can be mounted between the lathe centers.

5. The maximum bore diameter. This is the maximum diameter of bar stock that can be passed though the hole of the head stock spindle.

These are same important measure which we need to know before ordering a lathe machine . And some other parameters are range of spindle speed, number of feeds, number and range of metric and BSW threads that can be cut, pitch of leadscrew and power inputs etc.

Today Different forms of lathe machine are available  some of them are turret lathe, CNC lathe, light duty, medium duty and heavy duty lathe machine. It is important to Selecting a lathe machine according to your requirements to get the best results. For example, if your requirements are more and you need a fast and efficient machine for bulk applications, then a robust heavy duty lathe machine will be a good choice rather than going for a standard light duty lathe which is comparatively cheaper than the machine specifically designed for the bulk or heavy operations. A heavy duty lathe machine for metal shaping is usually equipped with high speed, automated functionalities and technologically advanced features and therefore can give better performance with faster and efficient work for longer period of time than the machine designed for light or medium duty applications. we can make thread on these machine too
